REO Speedwagon – Time for Me to Fly

From their 1978 album, You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can’t Tuna Fish. The song reached #56 on Billboards Hot 100 chart on August 26, 1978.

From songfacts.

Lead singer Kevin Cronin wrote this song, which finds him ready to move on from a relationship, even though it’s going to hurt. In a Songfacts interview, he told the story behind the song: “I had been in love with my first love – a girl that I met in high school. But there was a point where I knew that I had to move on, but didn’t want to, because I was attached to her. I knew that it wasn’t working, so I went to Colorado to put some distance between me and her, even though that wasn’t what I consciously did.

When I got there, a friend of mine had a guitar sitting on his porch. I went to play it, and it sounded horrible. I realized that it was in some kind of different tuning, so I just messed around with it. I remembered Richie Havens at Woodstock. When he played, he wrapped his thumb around the top of the neck, and I thought, ‘I’ll try that.’ I did, and sure enough, it sounded good.

A lot of times, that’s what happens: you find something on the guitar that you like, and then the things that you’re feeling become attached to that music, and that’s what the songs are hatched from.”

Apparently, the girl this song was written about has been missing for decades. “I literally just got a call from this mystery TV show – kind of a reality TV show – that the girl that I wrote ‘Time for Me to Fly’ about went missing,” Cronin told Songfacts in 2017. “Literally, went missing like, 30 years ago. And they were calling me. I declined to be filmed for the show.”

Time for Me to Fly

I’ve been around for you
Been up and down for you
But I just can’t get any relief
I’ve swallowed my pride for you
I’ve lived and lied for you
But you still make me feel like a thief
You got me stealing your love away
‘Cause you never give it
Peeling the years away
And we can’t relive it
Oh, I make you laugh
And you make me cry
I believe it’s time for me to fly
You said we’d work it out
You said that you had no doubt
That deep down we were really in love
Oh, but I’m tired of holding on
To a feeling I know is gone
I do believe that I’ve had enough
I’ve had enough of the falseness
Of a worn-out relation
Enough of the jealousy
And the intoleration
Oh, I make you laugh
And you make me cry
I believe it’s time for me to fly
Time for me to fly
Oh, I’ve got to set myself free
(Time for me to fly)
And that’s just how it’s got to be
I know it hurts to say goodbye
But it’s time for me to fly
Oh, don’t you know it’s time for me to fly
Oh, I’ve got to set myself free
(Time for me to fly)
Oh, babe, that’s just how it’s got to be
I know it hurts to say goodbye
But it’s time for me to fly
It’s time for me to fly
It’s time for me to fly
(It’s time for me to fly)
It’s time for me to fly
(It’s time for me to fly)
It’s time for me to fly
(It’s time for me to fly)
It’s time for me to fly

Roy Orbison – She’s a Mystery to Me

From his 1989 album, Mystery Girl. The song reached #23 on Billboards adult contemporary chart on May 27, 1989. The song was written by Bono and The Edge from U2.

From Wikipedia.

During a restless night of sleep in June 1987 in London during U2’s Joshua Tree Tour, Bono slept with the soundtrack to the film Blue Velvet CD on repeat. The CD had been given to him by the Edge’s wife. The soundtrack includes the song “In Dreams” by Orbison. When he woke the following morning, Bono had a tune in his head which he assumed was from the soundtrack. He soon realised it wasn’t, so he wrote down the basic structure of the song. Later that day he sang the unfinished song to the band at their pre-concert soundcheck at Wembley Arena. After the concert, Orbison paid the band an unannounced visit backstage, where a perplexed Bono played the song for him. Bono and Orbison worked again on the song in mid-November in Los Angeles. The album Mystery Girl was named after the song.

She’s a Mystery To Me

Darkness falls and she will take me by the hand
Take me to some twilight land
Where all but love is grey
Where I can’t find my way
Without her as my guide
Night falls I’m cast beneath her spell
Daylight comes our heaven turns to hell
Am I left to burn and burn eternally
She’s a mystery to me
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
In the night of love words tangled in her hair
Words soon to disappear
A love so sharp it cut
Like a switchblade to my heart
Words tearing me apart
She tears again my bleeding heart
I want to run she’s pulling me apart
Fallen angel cries and I just melt away
She’s a mystery to me
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
Haunted by her side is the darkness in her eyes
That so enslaves me
But if my love is blind
Then I don’t want to see
She’s a mystery to me
Night falls I’m cast beneath her spell
Daylight comes our heaven turns to hell
Am I left to burn and burn eternally
She’s a mystery to me
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl
She’s a mystery girl

Jimi Hendrix – Angel

This is my contribution to Song Lyric Sunday for Jim Adams blog. This weeks theme is Bird/Fly/Sky/Wing.

From songfacts.

Hendrix got the idea for this from a dream where his mother came down from heaven to take him with her.
Hendrix started working on this in 1967 along with “Little Wing,” which was a similar song. He gave up on it, but pulled it out and recorded it on July 23, 1970 – just a few months before his death on September 18, 1970.
Mitch Mitchell used a variable frequency oscillator to get an unusual sound. He didn’t like the way it came out and rerecorded his part in October 1970 after the death of Hendrix. >>

Angel

Angel came down from heaven yesterday
She stayed with me just long enough to recue he
And she told me a story yesterday,
about the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea
And then she spread her wings high over me
She said she’s gonna come back tomorrow

And I said “fly on my sweet angel,
fly on through the sky,
fly on my sweet angel,
tomorrow I’m gonna be by your side”

Sure enough this morning came unto me
Silver wings silhouetted against the child’s sunrise
And my angel sha said unto
“today is the day for you to rise,
Take my hand, you’re gonna be my man,
you’re gonna rise”
And she took high over yonder

And I said “fly on my sweet angel,
fly on through the sky,
fly on my sweet angel,
forever I will be by your side”

Nazareth – Holiday

From their 1980 album, Malice In Wonderland. The song reached #87 on Billboards Hot 100 chart on April 12, 1980.

From eightiesrarevideos.

Holiday” is a catchy tongue-in-cheek rock song that cleverly folds in several different musical styles (in particular, the chorus has a Caribbean feel that contrasts nicely with the rock verses).  It was released in 1980, and was off Nazareth’s wonderfully named Malice in Wonderland LP, which goes on my “coolest album names ever” list, along with Thomas Dolby’s Aliens Ate My Buick and the Hoodoo Gurus‘ Mars Needs Guitars.

Nazareth is an interesting band who never quite made it big, but managed to have a moderately successful career, while making some seriously good music.  The band started in Scotland in 1968 (!) and between 1975 and 1981, they had 7 consecutive albums break the U.S. top 100, although only 1975’s Hair of the Dog broke the top 20.  I believe that they are an official one hit wonder, as only “Love Hurts” broke the top 40.  How “Hair of the Dog” didn’t chart is beyond me.

Holiday

Drinkin’ my wine, makes me feel fine
Gonna have me a holiday
Poor man’s party, rich man’s daughter
Gettin’ hotter and hotter
She’s pushin’ way too hard
I don’t want any part of her way
Drinkin’ my wine, makes me feel fine
Gonna have me a holiday
It’s a holiday… It’s a holiday
Mama mama please, no more jaguars
I don’t want to be a pop star
Mama mama please, no more deckhands
I don’t want to be a sailor man
Mama mama please, no more face lifts
I just don’t know which one you is
Mama mama please, no more husbands
(I don’t know who my daddy is)
Drinkin’ my wine, wastin’ my time
Hidin’ out in my rented dream
Lookin’ for attention
A cover story mention in
Life magazine
Ask the chauffeur who he knows
Numbers he’s got, lots of those
Drinkin’ my wine, spendin’ my time
Tryin’ to run from this Halloween
It’s a holiday… It’s a holiday
Mama mama please, no more jaguars
I don’t want to be a pop star
Mama mama please, no more deckhands
I don’t want to be a sailor man
Mama mama please, no more face lifts
I just don’t know which one you is
Mama mama please, no more husbands
(I don’t know who my daddy is)
It’s a holiday… It’s a holiday

AC/DC – This House Is on Fire

From their 1983 album, Flick Of The Switch. The song never charted. The Young brothers could get more sounds out of a guitar than anyone. Malcolm is delaying the rythm just enough when the song goes to the chorus to cause a crossfire guitar effect.

This House Is on Fire

Yonder she walks
Yonder she walks
Hitting 103
A little tongue in cheek
Hot personality
She bring on the flames
And it’s burning it’s burning
My body’s achin’ tossin’ and turnin’
This house is on fire
This house is on fire
This house is on fire
And the flame is gonna burn in
You
She got me runnin’ for shelter
Needing quarantine
She got me red hot and wired
Call on emergency
She bring on the flames
And it’s burning it’s burning
My body’s achin’ tossin’ and turnin’
This house is on fire
This house is on fire
This house is on fire
And the flame is gonna burn in
You
You got me burnin’ and burnin’
You got me tossin’ and turnin’
This house is on fire
House is on fire
This house is on fire
House is on fire
This house is on fire
This house is on fire
House is on fire
And the flame is gonna burn in
I’ll bet it’s gonna burn
I’m gonna burn
You

Nazareth – Love Leads To Madness

No new post today but I thought I would reblog an older post.

freefallin14's avatarFree Fallin'

From the 1982 album 2XS it peaked at #19 on the Billboard mainstream rock charts. Nazareth went with a softer sound in the 80’s. The video was another MTV staple.

Do I feel alright?
I’ll go anywhere you say you wanna to take me
Save me, run away-ay-ay, steal away-ay-ay
‘Cause I feel alright
I’ll do anything you say you wanna make me
Take me, far away-ay-ay, run away-ay-ay

We’ve been up all night
Tryin’ to avoid a situation
Hold me, let me feel your way
‘Cause I wanna stay
Let them all start talkin’
We won’t give ourselves away

Our love leads to madness
Our love leads to madness
Our love leads to madness

Do you feel alright?
An’ can you see me when you’re lookin’ in your mirror
Crazy, try to find a way, so your heart don’t pay
Run away-ay-ay
Don’t you give yourself away

Our love…

The London Quireboys – “7 O’Clock”

From their 1990 album, A Bit of What You Fancy. The song reached #37 on the UK singles chart. It did not chart in the U.S. but I did see the video on MTV and also TBS which used to play music videos overnight I believe on the weekends.

“7 O’Clock”

Get Out
Ohh Ya Ya
Come On
Wooo
Well It Was 7 O Clock
When She Let Me In
She Said Tell Me Son
What’s Your Kind Of Thing
I Go Wooo Hooo Ya
Wooo Hooo Oh Ya
Through Back Her Hair
She Looked And Smiled Ya
I Need Some Company
For A Little While
I Go Wooo Hooo Ya
Wooo Hooo Oh Ya
Wooo Hooo
She’s Just A Sweet Little Thing
But I Like The Way She Dances
When She Get’s You By The Hand
And She Give’s You All Ya Ya Ya Ya
Oh It’s 7 O Clock
Time For A Party
And I Know What I Wanna See
It’s 7 O Clock

Time For A Party
And I Know What I Wanna See
Oh Ya
Come On
I Used To Love Her
But She Turned Me Away
She Couldent Take Me
For Another Day
I Go Wooo Hooo Ya
Wooo Hooo Oh Ya
Love Her Once
And She’ll Love Ya Twice
She Got A Hold Of My
Dirty Device
I Go Wooo Hooo Ya
Wooo Hooo Oh Ya
Wooo Hooo
It’s 7 O Clock
Time For A Party
And I Know
What I Wanna Feel
It’s 7 O Clock
Time For A Party
Just Come Come Up And See Ya
Ohhh Ya
Come On
Alright
Woooh
Ya

Chilliwack – My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)

From their 1981 album, Wanna Be A Star. The song reached #22 on Billboards Hot 100 chart on December 12, 1981, The song spent 4 weeks at #3 in Canada.

From Wikipedia.

In their native Canada, writers Brian MacLeod and Bill Henderson were nominated for the Juno Award for 1982 Composer of the Year. Also, “My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)” was nominated for the Juno Award for 1982 Single of the Year.

Chilliwack – My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)

Ever since left me
I sure feel all alone
A little misunderstanding
I can’t get her on the telephone
Hanging out down on Main Street
Living in a different world
Standing around with the gang on the corner
Talking about my girl
My girl, she was the world to me
She’s gone, away across the street
My girl, is just a memory
She’s been so long away
She didn’t have to leave me
She didn’t have to run
She didn’t have to go without a word to anyone
I hope she’s doing alright
I got no way to know
Unless she gets to hear this song
Hear it on the radio
My girl, she was the world to me
She’s gone, and that’s a tragedy
My girl, is just a memory
She’s been so long away
I hope she gets the message
Got to get back, you know
Gonna track her down, I’ll find that girl
Gonna tell her that I love her so
Put the word on the grapevine
Spread it all around the world
Sooner or later I know I’m gonna get her
I’m talking about my girl
My girl
My girl [Repeat x12]

John Lennon And Yoko…On The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon 1972

I ran across this video on Youtube just the other day but it was not the exact same video because Jerry Lewis was cut out of it and I had no idea at the time that it was from the telethon. I found the same video but with Jerry Lewis in it and Jerry joins in at the end. It doesn’t feel like Labor Day like it used to with Jerry and the telethon gone.

From Bestclassicbands.

On Sept. 4, The couple appeared on Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, broadcast from the Americana Hotel on 7th Avenue in New York City. Lewis introduced John and Yoko as, “…two of the most unusual people in all the world, and I don’t mean just in the world of entertainment. They fit no patterns, meet no standards except the standard of excellence. Ladies and Gentlemen, John Lennon and Yoko.”

With the backing of Elephant’s Memory, they performed “Imagine” and Yoko’s political song ‘Now or Never,” with the sadly prescient lyric, “Are we gonna keep shooting the ones that try to change?” Yoko introduced her song by saying, “John and I love this country very much and we’re very happy that we’re still here.” They closed with a sing-along reggae version of ‘Give Peace a Chance,” at a time when not many Americans had heard of reggae music. Lennon explained, “This is how they do it in Jamaica!” Contrary to the intended response, it’s very possible that the phones stopped ringing while John and Yoko were performing. Lennon praised Lewis as “a great comedian—I wish he never grew up!”

As they leave the stage, Lewis leads the excited crowd in a chant for an encore, “John, Yoko, John, Yoko!” but they’d already exited the building. Lewis realizes that they are not coming back, and says, “I would suspect that John Lennon is probably one of the wisest showmen I’ve ever met. He knows what he’s doing. He did two things tonight. He, one, came here to help, the primary purpose of his visit. And, two, he meant to say something. I think he did both those things. He has split. Let’s thank him very much

Dorothy – Gun In My Hand

This is my contribution to Song Lyric Sunday for Jim Adams blog. The theme is Cowboy/Gun/Hat/Horse/Western

From her 2016 album Rockisdead, The song never charted.

Gun In My Hand

Why did love put a gun in my hand?
Why did love put a gun in my hand?
Why did love put a gun in my hand?
In my bed, in my head, in my hand
Was it for redemption?
Was it for revenge?
Was it for the bottle?
Was it for the ledge?
Was it for the thrill of pushing my hope to the edge?
Why did love, why did love put a gun in my hand?
Why did love, why did love put a gun in my hand?
[Verse 2]
Why did love put a knife in my heart?
Why did love open up my scars?
Why did love put a knife in my heart?
In my bed, in my head, in my heart
Was it for redemption?
Was it for revenge?
Was it for the bottle?
Was it for the ledge?
Was it for the thrill of pushing my hope to the edge?
Why did love, why did love put a gun in my hand?
Why did love, why did love
Why did love put a gun in my hand?
(Why did love, why did love, why did love)
Put a gun in my hand (why did love, why did love)
Why did love put a gun in my hand?
Whoa in my hand
Oh, was it for redemption?
Was it for revenge?
Was it for the bottle?
Was it for the ledge? (Who-oa)
Was it for the thrill of pushing my hope to the edge?
Why did love, why did love put a gun in my hand?
Ooh, in my hand
Why did love, why did love put a gun in my hand?
