I just heard this song this morning for the first time. It kind of caught me off guard because it has more of a rock feel than anything coming out of Stax records at that time. It reached number 132 on Billboards pop chart.
From Wikipedia,
The song “Big Bird” (featuring Booker T. Jones on organ and guitar, Al Jackson, Jr. on drums, and Donald “Duck” Dunn on bass) was written while Floyd waited in a London airport for a plane back to the United States for Otis Redding’s funeral. Although not a US hit, it became an underground favorite, was later covered by Alex Chilton, The Jam, and several others, sampled by Transglobal Underground in the track “Jatayu,” and was featured on the video game Test Drive Unlimited.
Big Bird
‘Cause I’m coming up to you
So send down your wings
And let ’em bring me to you
Oh, big ‘ol aeroplane, I’m trusting you so
Get on up big bird, to my baby’s love
Get on up big bird,
Cause I got to make it,
Just get on up
‘Cause I got to make it,
Get on up
And you up there
Now all we know is
It ain’t no fair
Holdin’ my claim check,
Gonna be with my baby
And never comin’ back
Get on up big bird, to my baby’s love
Get on up big bird,
Up
Up
Just get on up
‘Cause I’m coming up to you
So send down your wings
And let ’em bring me to you
Get on up big bird, to my baby’s love
Get on up big bird,
‘Cause I got to make it,
Just get on up
Cause I got to make it,
Get on up
Get on up big bird,
Get on up big bird,
Get on up big bird,
Get on up big bird
I never heard that either…really good song.

Another thing about the song was he was waiting at the London airport to fly back for Otis Redding funeral when he wrote it. The Box Tops also covered it.

That is really sad. I’ll check out the Box Tops version also. I can see why Chilton signed with Stax…The Box Tops did a lot of soul songs.
